The Proposal

The Night I Said "I Do"

It was just another Friday night. We had been going to convention planning meetings every other week for over a year by now with the same small group of people. We prefer to call this small group of people part of our chosen family. The meeting began in the same chaotic and unorganized manor as usual except that Jim wanted to do the report for his committee first instead of being last. As the secretary for the committee I was poised to do my job and  had my pen to paper ready for action.

I think the rest of the room knew what was happening before I did. He began to speak, "You might want to turn around for this." As I turned to look at him I was overfilled with joy and excitement, flooded with emotion. I think some smart ass in the room said some smart ass comment like, "You had me at hello", but I didn't hear a word. Everything went quiet and it felt like we were the only two people in the room. Then the most beautiful words came out of his mouth and with a tear in his eye he said...

"I guarantee that we will have though times. I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine I will regret it for the rest of my life, because I know in my heart you're the only one for me."

Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said "Yes!" They were the most beautiful and perfect words I have ever heard! He is my best friend, my lover, my companion, my confidant, and I get to share the rest of my life with him. Jim has surpassed every expectation or limitation I have ever placed on men. He is sweet, kind, compassionate, loving, patient, tolerant, and perfect. Perfect for me.

He couldn't have picked a better time or place than that. It was very meaningful to share that experience with people that we love and had been through so much with.

I found later that he had a bet with Deanne. He bet that I would cry, she said I wouldn't. Not sure how much he lost, but after he proposed we had to take a break because I, being the secretary for the committee, couldn't quite get focused on the task at hand.
